Registry FAQ
I would like to work online in Digital beef, what is required to do this?
In order to be set up to work online in Digital beef you will have to contact the CLA office so we can set up a password. We also require a valid credit card to be placed on file, and strongly encourage you to enroll your females on WHE.
I do not own the bull I am using to breed my cows, what do I need to do?
If you are borrowing a bull to breed your cows, you will need to have a lease agreement set up. The owner of the bull can do this through Digital Beef or by completing a Lease Agreement document.
If the bull is owned by one member of the family and is used for another family member with a separate membership account, a lease agreement will still need to be set up for them to use this bull.
Can I register a calf whose dam was exposed to two bulls?
In the event of a "multiple sire breeding" by either more than one bull in the pasture or progeny resulting from a change of bulls within 12 days, either by AI or single bull mating, the calf will need to be Sire Verified by DNA testing. This can be best achieved by recording the calf in Digital beef, then requesting DNA sire verification with a list of all possible sires to test. Once the DNA results are back with a qualified sire, then the calf can be upgraded to registered.
My cow had twins, how do I register them both?
When a cow has twins and is enrolled on WHE you can register both calves in the birth queue.
I have used an Angus Bull to breed my Limousin cow for a Lim-flex calf, how do I register the calf if the bull is not in Digital Beef?
To register a calf from a bull that is not in Digital beef the bull will have to be imported. For an Angus bull, he can be imported from the Angus association, and he must still meet CLA bylaw requirements: Parent Verified if born after January 1, 2021, or Sire Verified if born before that date. There will be an import fee and a genotype import fee.
Once he is imported into the CLA herdbook then you can go ahead and register your calves in the birth queue.
What is the time frame for collecting performance data on my calves?
Performance data should be collected at Birth, Weaning and One Year of Age.
I want to flush my cow to get embryos, what do I need to know?
Donor cows are required to have Parent Verification completed by DNA if flushed after January 1, 2021 (Sire Verification if born before then). They also need to be Protoporia free by pedigree, or have a negative Proto test completed at the lab.
Donor cows must have a flush record completed and on file with the association to register any progeny.
I would like to AI my cows, what do I need to know?
AI sires must meet all CLA bylaws before you can register progeny from them. AI bulls need to be registered, Parent Verified, Proto tested (or proto normal by pedigree) and if they are not a Canadian born animal they must be imported into the Canadian Herd book. This can be completed by contacting the CLA office.
It is good practice to confirm the bull you plan to use meets all AI requirements prior to breeding your cows.
Why is it important to enter all calves born, even if we do not plan on registering them. And if a cow does not have a calf why do I need to enter that data?
It is important to enter all calves born in a specific year, or record why a cow did not have a calf in a specific year. This provides insight into the cow's production and may also be used in the genetic evaluations.
What types of payments does the CLA take?
We are able to take Credit card payments, cheques, or email transfers. Email transfers should include your membership number and can be sent to limousin@limousin.com
What does the prefixes mean on my animal registration?
CFM/CFF - Canadian Fullblood animals, these are 100% limousin and trace directly back to the French Herdbook. All fullblood animals are required to have DNA parentage completed.
CPM/CPF - Canadian Purebred animals, these animals are Canadian born with 90% or more Limousin Blood.
CXM/CXF - These animals are 37.5%-89% Limousin blood, and their sire or dam must be at least 75% Limousin.
CXM/CXF - This prefix is also used for Lim-flex animals (they will be printed on special Lim-flex certificate paper), in order to be a Lim-flex the animal must be 37.5%-75% Limousin Blood and 25%-62.5% Angus blood.
URM/URF - Unregistered animals recorded in Digital Beef.
FNM/FNF - Foundation animals, these are animals that are entered as commercial animals, these animals have unknown parentage or non-registered parentage, these are entered into the registry to build the pedigree of another animal. If entering in a recipient dam as an FNF animal, please include approximate birth date and genetic make-up, this helps to build the embryo calf's EPD's.
I would like to order the Pink Limousin Tags, how do I order them?
The pink Limousin tags are ordered directly through the CCIA website, tags.canadaid.ca or by calling 1-877-909-2333.
In order to be eligible to receive the pink Limousin CCIA RFID tags a person must qualify under one of the following:
- CLA members in good standing with active Limousin females.
- Producers who have purchased CLA registered bull(s) whose ownership has been transferred in the last 8 years. One bag of 25 tags per bull is the commercial allotment.
- Proof of Limousin or Lim-Flex semen purchase.
I have purchased an animal with another member, how do we both show ownership of the animal?
When you enter into a "partnership" with another member on an animal you will need to fill out a Partnership Agreement Application. Send the form to the CLA office and they will set up the partnership in Digital Beef and give that partnership a membership number.
There are no yearly membership fees on partnership accounts unless it is set up a new membership with its own tattoo prefix.
I sold an animal to a person that is not a member of the CLA, how do I complete the transfer?
If the person that purchased an animal cannot be found using the search tool in Digital Beef, then contact the CLA office and we will set them up.
Commercial buyers can be set up as non-members in Digital Beef so that papers can be transferred. This is a good practice even if the buyer does not require papers, it will remove the animal from your inventory and help you create a buyers list in your Digital Beef profile.
I have purchased animals in a sale and they are not in my herd in Digital Beef, why?
In the case of the sale of an animal or an interest in the animal for breeding purposes, the seller shall complete the application for transfer and forward the application for transfer and the certificate of registration to the Association within 90 days of the date of the sale.
If it has been past 90 days since the sale, or purchase of your livestock, it is best to reach out to the seller, or Sales consultant (if they were the ones in charge of transfers) and inquire about when the transfer will be completed.
I cannot find my animal certificate, how do I complete the transfer of ownership?
If you have had a certificate printed in the past and can no longer find it or it was destroyed you can complete the Duplicate Certificate Affidavit. Once filled out, send it to the CLA office and we will complete the transfer on your behalf.
I purchased embryos. What is needed to register these calves?
Embryo calves require flush records on file for their specific flush date.
Embryo calves must be recorded in Digital Beef, then DNA set up to have parentage completed on them.
If an embryo was purchased we need an Embryo Transfer of Ownership Form or a bill of sale showing breeding, flush date and sale information.
If the person selling the embryo does not match the person that flushed the cow, then we also need a Lease signed "with right to flush" for the cow.
Purchased embryo's can be entered into a member's embryo inventory by the CLA staff when all the required documents of purchase are supplied.
