Whole Herd Enrollment (WHE) is a cow-based program that reports performance data for each enrolled female every year. It's not only the most cost effective way to register your calves, it also provides more accurate and meaningful data for managing your herd.

The Basics of Whole Herd Enrollment

The WHE program has the most value if your "Whole Herd" is enrolled. Each year you will be asked to report calving and performance data on each enrolled female. This information is key to having genetic evaluation (EPDs) and management reporting be as accurate and meaningful as possible.

Because it is a cowherd based program it allows reporting on things such as complete herd productivity and is the basis for development of various maternal EPDs such as mature height/weight, stayability and heifer pregnancy.

Some developments currently being worked on include benchmarking reports, calving distributions, and overall herd productivity measures such as pounds weaned per cow exposed. Additionally, information is being used to develop reporting features that can assist in farm management activities.

All-in Pricing

Your annual fee to enroll a female covers all basic registry services for the calf born that year, which is a huge savings over individual registration and transfer fees.

WHE enrollment includes:

Registration for the natural calves (single or twin) born in the year for which the female is enrolled.

One transfer on the natural calf (or calves), to follow the calf through out its lifetime.

One registration and transfer for one calf of an embryo donor dam. This registration is at the discretion of the enrollee of the dam.

One transfer on the female, to follow the female in the year it is enrolled. (This transfer is renewed each year that the female is enrolled).

Participation in the International Genetic Analysis, and EPDs.

Weaning and yearling performance report, including adjusted weights, ranks and indexes, and EPDs.

On-line self service available (only to WHE supporters).

For members that do registry work by paper you are mailed your WHE package in the fall. Online Digital Beef users please log into your account and complete your WHE under the Herd Management, Inventory tab. It can be easy to forget from year to year how to do our enrollment. We are happy to help walk you through this - please call or email the office or view our tutorials.

If you have not completed your enrollments/disposals by January 15th, all assessment age females will be billed for the calendar year. Females can not be removed from your WHE after January 15th.

Registering Calves Outside of WHE

If you do not wish to enroll your entire herd, you may register animals of your choice by using this registration form. However it is important to know:

- Members NOT enrolled in WHE are subject to the paying the non-WHE registration fees (depending on age of the animal), as well as additional fees to register progeny and complete transfers

- Your performance information will not be accounted for in the genetic evaluations

- You cannot use the on-line self service

Note: It is of value to report all your calves to the CLA, even if the ones you have no intention of registering. This information has many useful applications.

Why was I billed for the females I sold in May on my second half of WHE?

I only register a couple calves a year, should I still enroll my cows on WHE?

WHE is a cost effective way to register calves and cover transfers of animals. The cost savings is quite substantial with registrations starting at $150/calf and transfers at $30/animal, if you are not enrolled.

If you feel WHE is not a fit for your operation you can OPT out by contacting the CLA office, we will opt you out and no females will be assessed.

IF you decide to add females to WHE in future years there is a $75 penalty fee that will be applied along with their WHE fee.

I would like to add my son/daughter/partner to my account for registry work, what is required?

If your membership account was originally set up with one person you can add people using the Membership Amendment Form. Once the form is filled out, send it in to the CLA office and we will update the Membership account to include their names and signatures.

If you do not want to add people to the membership name you could complete the Addendum to Membership Application. This will add signatures to additional members to authorize them to work in your account for registry purposes, but not add their name onto your account.

Can I order BVD testing through CLA?

We are not able to request BVD testing through the association. But members can request it commercially through Neogen Canada. Log onto the Neogen website, ensure you are on the Canadian region and register/log into your account. Search for the BVDV test, click download the online submission form, fill it out and upload it back to the website. Print a copy of the order confirmation and submit it with your samples. If you have a sample already on file from testing through CLA you can request that the lab uses that sample on file.
