November 2007 | Vol 1, Issue 9

Introduction Message

Hello everyone!
First, let me say that it is terrific to be part of the Limousin Association. I have learned a great deal already since starting with the office three days a week on November 5th.  I will gradually be taking over duties, with assistance and support from Dale Kelly, Barb Judd and the staff while I “learn the ropes” during the transition period. Your CLA Board of Directors are looking at options for Marketing and plan to meet early in the new year to make some decisions in that regard.

I attended both Farm Fair International (Edmonton) and Agribition (Regina) recently. I took those opportunities to meet some of the Limousin breeders present, as I believe it’s important for members to know who is working for them. It makes it much easier to deal with someone by phone or email when you have met that person, at least once. I apologize to those breeders whom I didn’t have an opportunity to talk with, due to your busy schedules or mine! Hopefully I’ll be able to get together with more of you, in the near future, at some of the upcoming bull congresses or other activities.

I’m looking forward to working with you.

Holiday Office Hours

Please note that the CLA office will be closed December 24th to 26th for the holidays.  The office will be open regular hours December 27th.

Important Dates
Please mark your calendars with the following dates. As more information and details become available, we'll let you know.
  • CLA Board Meeting: March 17th and 18th, 2008 in Calgary
  • CLA AGM and Youth National Show: July 24,25,26 at Lloydminster Sask/AB.

On-line Instructions: to Hold, Transfer or Print papers
It is now possible to register an animal online and select a Hold Paper option (on the Register Screen).

The animal will be assigned a registration number and the breeder will be billed – but the paper will not print.

Breeders can then access the list of “held papers” from their Online main web page under:

My Herd
My Held Papers Transfer or Print

From this list you can do one of two things:

1) Request a paper be printed
This will trigger a paper to print at a zero charge in the CLA print Run and the animal will disappear from the list.

Or

2) Transfer the animal
If they do not know the Buyer’s CLA number for transfer they can fill in a form on the transfer screen and have the office staff provide them with the correct information. These request emails will come in via the office email account.

Ultrasound Mark of Excellence Program
Spring is ultrasound season and UGC ultrasound information should be collected between 320 and 440 days of age. CLA pays a rebate of $5 per record for each record collected in a valid contemporary group. Ultrasound data is currently included in the genetic evaluation for carcass merit.

Carcass Information
CLA pays a rebate of $10 for each carcass record that can be included in genetic evaluation. Carcass data must be from calves of a known sire, and should include Dam age, breed, identification as well as calf identification and detailed harvest information. Breeders with calves on feed or interested in testing sires are encouraged to contact the CLA for details or technical assistance.

18th International Limousin Conference: Italy May 20-28, 2008
Information on the 18th International Limousin Conference is now available at http://www.anacli.it/

Genetic Evaluation
CLA data has been sent to the North American Cattle Evaluation. Look for updated EPD early in the new year.
