Notice:  CLA-Sponsored Igenity Testing
The CLA Board announces that April 1st, 2008 marks the end of the CLA-sponsored Igenity testing on Limousin herd sires and sale bulls. All samples on qualifying bulls must be received by the lab prior to April 1st to participate in the remainder of the program. Please note that you must already have the tags required in your possession to meet this deadline. Breeders can continue with their testing, but from April 1st forward it will be at their own expense.

Canadian Limousin Breeders Directory Reminder

The deadline has arrived for the Canadian Limousin Breeders Directory. If you have not gotten your information into the Juniors to be part of the directory, we'd ask you to cut out the mailback form from one of the previous Limousin Voice magazines and send it with your payment as soon as humanly possible!

T Bar Invitational
“The T Bar Invitational” – a marketing seminar and golf tournament designed to raise awareness of young people in agriculture, namely junior purebred cattle breeders and their associations – will be held June 24th and 25th in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Participants will have the opportunity to golf Dakota Dunes, rated by Golf Digest as the number one new golf course in Canada in 2005.  The event will feature a social and Calcutta auction on the evening of June 24th, followed the next morning with a breakfast marketing seminar, the “Texas Scramble” golf tournament starting at noon and a wind-up awards banquet at the adjacent Dakota Dunes Casino that evening.

All funds generated from this event will be appropriated to the breeds which have a recognized national junior program and association. Percentage of funds allocated will be based on membership numbers, and in addition, a portion of funds will be appropriated to the Canadian 4-H Council.

Sponsorship and participation is key to the success of this event, with the goal being the generation of funds for Canada’s Junior Livestock programs. Sponsorship opportunities and registration information can be obtained from co-chairs Dale Kelly at the Saskatchewan Research Council (306) 220-5759 and Bryan Kostiuk of Today's Publishing Limited (306)934-9696, or Ted Serhienko (306) 933-4200.

Breed Improvement Update

The CLA Breed Improvement Committee met March 17th to discuss the direction of the CLA’s breed improvement programs.

There are several major initiatives arising over the coming year including:

  • Adoption of a new service provider for genetic evaluation
While the evaluation will remain largely unchanged, CLA in partnership with NALF are working with a new evaluation service provider to provide a long term solution for genetic evaluation. Details will come in the months ahead.

Member and staff educational programs and extension efforts

  • The LBIC has identified that member and staff learning are key to success in the industry. There are various fact sheets and other information available at www.limousin.com
Incorporation of new DNA technologies, such as SNP testing into general use by the membership
  • DNA technology is one of the most rapidly evolving areas of livestock genetics. The LBIC discussed and is working on strategies to help members move towards new technology that is also proven and more cost effective than the current generation of DNA technologies. DNA represents an area where the pace of learning required to maintain leadership will be unprecedented.

As most members are aware the CLA has taken an aggressive approach to breed improvement. Members are encouraged to participate in total herd reporting, the ultrasound and carcass rebate programs, and collection of heifer pregnancy data either online or via the enrolment forms.

Strong spring sales show the value of quality, proven Limousin genetics. Data collection on such traits as udder score, temperament and frame are also strongly encouraged.

Look for further updates as the Limousin breed improvement program continues to progress.

Notice re: E-mail Subject Line
The CLA office gets a great deal of “SPAM” and your email may inadvertently be deleted. To avoid your email being overlooked and deleted, please provide specific information in the subject line.

A great way to make sure that we address your concerns in a timely fashion, is to put pertinent information in the subject line. This information should always include your Membership Number. If your inquiry is about a specific animal, please include the tattoo and or Registration number of the animal in the subject line. If your inquiry is about Whole Herd Enrollment (WHE) or a registration question, etc., please say so in the subject line.

The body of the email should go into detail about your request.

Example of “Subject Line” information:
Mem# 98765 – Order DNA – XYZ 123S
(The body of the email would have more detailed information stating whether this is a Herd Sire etc.)
