 USA Imports

Limousin cattle imported from the U.S.A. are accepted at face value into the Canadian Herd Book providing they meet all Canadian registration requirements. Fullblood animals will be entered in the Herd Book as Purebred animals if not parent verified directly back to the first imported Full French animal.

Determining Limousin Percentage

Procedure used by the CLA

  1. If an animal is imported into the CLA Herd Book, the percentages of ALL animals in the pedigree are recalculated according to CLA rules. This frequently results in a lower percentage Limousin for NALF animals entering the CLA Herd Book.
  2. The Limousin percentage of the sire and dam are added together and divided by two. The resulting figure rounded using the standard "add .5" procedure (ex. 87.5 becomes 88). This number is the Limousin percentage of the calf.
  3. If the dam is not a recorded Limousin, it is considered 0% Limousin. Sires must be a minimum 75% Limousin. The calf is eligible for registration if it is 37.5 - 100% Limousin.
  4. Registration prefix for Bulls and Cows:

          'CX' 37-89%
'CP' 90-100% with percentage cattle in pedigree
'CF' 100% with no percentage cattle in pedigree (these cattle will be 'CP' if not parent-verified)

Procedure used by NALF

If the sire or dam has an actual blood percentage of 93-100% Limousin, it is considered to be 100% Limousin for percentage calculation purposes of their offspring.

  1. The sire and dam Limousin percentages are added together and divided by two. The resulting figure is converted to whole numbers (ex. 87.5 becomes 87). This number is the Limousin percentage of the calf.
  2. If the sire or dam is not a recorded Limousin, it is considered 0% Limousin.
  3. The calf is eligible for registration as follows: Bulls 50-100% Limousin - Cows 37-100% Limousin
  4. Registration prefix:
          Bulls Cows

          'NX' 50-92% 37-86%
          'NP' 93-100% (Purebred) 87-100%
'NF' 100% - no percentage cattle in pedigree (Fullblood)

Registration numbers of the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) cattle remain the same (prefixes may change based on Canadian percentage calculations) and will be printed on the CLA pedigrees accordingly. Offspring of these cattle are registered in the appropriate category depending upon percentage of Limousin blood.

Anyone purchasing U.S.A. cattle should send a copy of the pedigrees directly to the Canadian Limousin Association for entry into the Canadian Herd Book. If you wish a Canadian certificate issued, then send the original American certificate along with your request to our head office. See the fee schedule for prices for "Entry into Herd Book" & "Application for Canadian Certificate on Imported Limousin Animals".

Lim-Flex Cattle

Lim-Flex cattle registered in the United States do not automatically qualify as Lim-Flex in Canada. Please consult the CLA prior to importing an animal and inquiry about its status prior to your purchase.
