DNA Genotyping Replaces Regular Blood Typing

Effective January 1, 2000 all parentage tests (including genotype on file for herd sires) will be performed using DNA technology, which is replacing regular blood typing.

When a test is requested you will be sent a kit for collecting hair. DNA genotyping reduces mailing costs for the CLA and is a more advanced technology. In most cases collecting and mailing hair samples is easier and more economical than the blood alternative.

In some parentage cases you will be advised by the CLA to send blood for regular blood typing. This will only occur if one or both of the parents does not have a stored DNA sample at the lab. (I.E. if a parent was blood typed before January 1993 and does not have a Canadian proto test.)

It is very important to understand and adhere to the protocol for collecting hair samples. This protocol will be included in the kit.

Proto testing can also be done utilizing hair or a semen sample.

You must apply for all tests through the CLA to avoid unnecessary charges from the lab. (Data is sent electronically although you are still required to enclose the preprinted application form, from the CLA with the sample).

'BG' = Type on file.
(minimum requirement for Natural Service Sire (Herdsire), also Donor Dams born prior to Jan.1, 1997)

'SV' = Parentage confirmed to Sire.
(minimum requirement for Donor Dams born after Dec.31, 1996)

'DV' = Parentage confirmed to Dam.

'PV' = Parentage confirmed to both Sire and Dam.
(minimum requirement for AI sires, Embryo (ET) Calves and Fullblood registrations)
